"Oils ain't Oils"

Fish oil is the natural oil found in the body of fish. It is different from fish liver oil because it contains high concentrations of essential omega-3 fatty acids. The human body is not able to produce these fatty acids itself, so we must get them from our diet.
The essential fatty acids are called EPA & DHA and they work on all the cells of the body. They have anti-inflammatory properties as well as specific benefits for our brain, heart and joint health.

How often do you eat fish?

If you’re not eating oily, cold-water fish at least 2-3 times a week, you are probably missing out on the health benefits of this wonder food. Fish oil plays an important role in all stages of our life from birth through to old age.
Because fish oil is something you should take over the course of your life, the source of the fish, the purity and concentration of the oil should be a major consideration. Mapp & Hession Pharmacy recommend a practitioner-only blend of UltraClean fish oil with the lowest levels of mercury and other heavy metals as well as protection from oxidation and no fishy aftertaste.

When we are young, the DHA component of fish oil plays a vital role in the structure ad function of the brain and the immune system. Considering children rarely, if ever, eat cold water oily fish, it is not surprising that learning difficulties and allergies are some of the major challenges that parents face these days.

Heart Health

Fish oils contribute to healthy heart function by helping to manage the healthy fat (triglycerides) levels in our blood and increase the amount of HDL or good cholesterol. Fish oil also helps to maintain a healthy heart rate.
The National Heart Foundation of Australia has made the following recommendation:-

“To lower their risk of coronary heart disease (CHD), all Australians should:
Consume about 500 mg per day of combined DHA and EPA through
a combination of the following:
• two or three serves (150 g serve) of oily fish per week
• fish oil capsules or liquid”

The heart foundation also recommends all Australian Health Professionals should advise all their patients with Coronary Heart Disease to double this recommendation.

Active Joints

We all know that to keep healthy we have to stay active, but if your joints don’t agree with you then this task becomes very difficult. Luckily fish oils have a strong anti-inflammatory component, so they’ll help calm the inflammation and pain of arthritis and get you moving again.

Call into Mapp & Hession Pharmacy for the right advice on the best fish oil supplement for you. As they say “oils ain’t oils”!!
