Itchy and Scratchy

Winter is well and truly with us. the days are cold & short and as August arrives, so does the dry weather and winds that remove the moisture from our skin.
It is at this time in the pharmacy that we see the highest rate of dermatitis like symptoms of inflamed, itchy skin, and it quite often stems from people letting their skin get too dry. Because it is not hot at the moment, we tend to ignore our 2 litres of water a day, which contributes to our general state of dehydration.

Did you know your skin is the largest organ in your body?

For the average adult, skin has a surface area of 1.5 – 2.0 square metres.

It is a complex organ, being responsible for helping regulate body temperature, synthesise essential vitamins, protect the body from harmful, cancer-causing UV rays and also ward off infection from viruses and bacteria. All this is achieved in an organ that is only about 2-3 mm thick.

To maintain skin health, you should first help your body from the inside. Drink plenty of fresh water and take a good quality fish oil such as Bioceuticals Ultraclean every day. The fish oil contains an anti-inflammatory ingredient that helps with red, inflamed skin and it also moisturises your skin from the inside.

Prevention is better than cure and a good quality moisturiser such as the Jurlique Moisture Replenishing Day Cream is an easily absorbed moisturising cream for dry skin that works to protect skin. It contains all natural ingredients grown in the Barossa Valley. Marshmallow intensely hydrates and softens the skin,Violet and Calendula help soothe and rebalance any skin sensitivity and Macadamia and Avocado Oil aid in long lasting moisturising of the skin and protect against moisture loss.
If your skin has already started to get inflamed, a product such as Dermaveen is a wonderful moisturising product that comes in cream, lotion, pH balanced shampoo and soap-free wash.
Dermaveen contains the active ingredient colloidal oatmeal, which has been shown to be naturally cleansing, moisturising, anti-itch, anti-inflammatory and protective.
The skin is a complex organ and the right advice is very important, call in and see our pharmacists Paul, Colin or Greg to ensure you get the right product for your skin.
