Zinc for Depression

Zinc for Depression

An analysis of seventeen studies looking at low zinc levels and depression has found there is a link between the two.

Zinc is an essential micronutrient with a wide range of  roles in the body relating to cell growth, the immune system and brain activity that can help reduce depression. If you are concerned about your zinc levels, you can ask your GP for a blood test to determine if you are deficient.

People suffering from recurrent infections can find themselves deficient in zinc and a daily supplement can break the cycle of illness. Other benefits of zinc are in acne blemishes as well as other inflammatory skin conditions as well as skin infections.

The analysis that was conducted on zinc levels and depression concluded that "depression is associated with a lower concentrationof zinc " in the blood stream. If you suffer from depression and would like further information about the role of zinc, call into the pharmacy and speak to Paul or Greg to see if this inexpensive supplement would be suitable for you.

Do You Suffer From Digestive Distress?

Posted by mapphess on 7 March 2013

Do you suffer from stomach pain, heartburn, cramping, bloating, nausea, constipation or general digestive discomfort?

Iberogast is a unique combination of 9 herbs that act together to provide relief of many different gut symptoms. This multi-targeted action is achieved by combining bitter herbs such as caraway fruit, celandine, chamomile flower and peppermint leaf.
Iberogast is one of the most extensively researched natural medicines worldwide, and proven effective in 19 clinical studies involving more than 45,000 patients. It has been fully evaluated for quality, safety and effectiveness and has been registered as a medicine.
Iberogast works on the muscular tone and movement of the intestines, it also reduces acid production and helps to protect the inner lining of the stomach. The anti-inflammatory and calming action helps reduce hypersensitivity in the stomach.
Iberogast is used for treating symptoms associated with gastric and abdominal discomfort such as bloating, reflux, flatulence, constipation, diarrhoea, heartburn and stomach cramping. These multiple symptoms are often associated with gastrointestinal disturbances such as dyspepsia or irritable bowel syndrome (IBS).
Dyspepsia is an upset stomach (also known as indigestion) with feelings of discomfort coming from the upper abdomen. IBS (on the other hand) affects the lower part of the gut namely the colon (also known as the large bowel) with symptoms of abdominal pain, stomach bloating and altered bowel habits (e.g diarrhoea or constipation). In IBS, the abdominal pain or discomfort is often relieved by passing wind or going to the toilet. Other gut symptoms with IBS may include heartburn, feeling sick (nausea) and excessive burping or belching. IBS is very common with 1 in 5 Australians experiencing these unpleasant range of symptoms.

Runway Makeup Artist Coming To Murwillumbah!

Shannon Cole, the QLD Event Makeup Artist for Napoleon Perdis cosmetics will be in Murwillumbah on March 21st to conduct a 3 hour, hands-on makeup workshop at Mapp & Hession Pharmacy in King St.

The daily routine of applying makeup is one most women are familiar with, but sometimes a little extra guidance from an experienced professional can take your efforts from “everyday” to “fabulous”!

Shannon works in the National Creative Team of Napoleon Perdis cosmetics, but began her career in Queensland with a diploma in Makeup Artistry. Whilst studying, she had the opportunity to fly to Hollywood where she gained further skills and experience and received certificates in High Fashion and Glamour, Beauty Makeup for Film/TV, Airbrushing and Special Effects/Character Makeup.

Since completing her studies, Shannon has worked on creative events such as the Alex Perry runway show, the Mercedes-Benz Fashion Festival 2011, the Brisbane Ekka Fashion Parades in 2008, 2010 and 2011 and the Kevin Murphy Hair photo shoot.

Shannon is now bringing her knowledge and experience to Mapp & Hession Pharmacy. The concept for the evening is small groups of ladies will work on their own “look” under the guidance of the Napoleon Perdis’ makeup artist. Whatever skill level you are at, from beginner to experienced, Shannon can show you how to achieve your best through her practical advice. You can try the ideas right there on the night and learn from an experienced professional.

You will be guided step by step through cleansing and skin care tips, then on the right products for your skin type and how to achieve the best look for you!

Napoleon Perdis has always sought to demystify makeup and his aim is to bring out the celebrity in every woman. Napoleon and his creative team, including makeup artists like Shannon, have become backstage regulars at both New York and Australian fashion weeks where they work with the industry’s top designers to create and communicate the trends of the season. While the Napoleon Perdis philosophy is strongly influenced by fashion, the brand is about reality and providing a look that you can wear day to day, or giving you the skills to create fabulous evening looks. It’s about celebrating and elevating your natural beauty with confidence-building products.

Glamour is at the heart of the Napoleon Perdis brand. Napoleon believes it’s sourced from within. Napoleon Perdis channels the celebrity in every woman.
Napoleon’s key influences include fashion, Hollywood, music, art and interior design. But while his eye is focused on trends and popular culture, he is committed to translating the directional into the doable. Women always want wearable.

It is these concepts that have made Napoleon Perdis cosmetics Australia’s number one makeup brand. Since starting his brand in Sydney in 1995, Napoleon has gone from strength to strength with celebrity endorsements and many of Hollywood’s A-list singing his praises.

Apply Well

Posted by mapphess on 22 August 2012

A new study conducted by French researchers has looked at how the quantity of sunscreen applied to the skin affects its ability to protect the skin.
Published in “The International Journal of Pharmaceutuics”, the research found that using half as much sunscreen lead to a decrease in effectiveness of the product by up to four times!
The researchers found that in most of the cases, halving the amount of sunscreen applied resulted in greater than halving of the SPF factor of the sunscreen.
Incorrect application of sunscreen could lower the SPF rating by anywhere from 2.5 to 13.5 which is very significant.

The message for all of us living in Australia is:-
• Use the highest possible SPF sunscreen
• Apply the product generously over all exposed areas of the skin
• Ensure the sunscreen you use has the broadest possible spectrum of protection. UVA and UVB should both be blocked.
• Re-apply at least as often as recommended on the packaging, and in most cases, more frequently than recommended

With spring upon us and another long hot summer coming up, the advice could not be more timely. Call into the pharmacy in King St and talk to us about the range of Ego SunSense sunscreens. Approved by dermatologists, Australian made and owned and very competitively priced. Prepare yourself for summer now.
